A Cabride onboard DSB K 582

A journey into Northzealand by steam train!

By Sebastian Berthelsen

on the 1st of August 2015 i had asked for permission to go on a cabride onboard K-class 582 from 1900, which on this date ran a special between Hillerød and Hundested.

I arrived at the station somewhere around 9 am, with the cabride paper and timetable in one hand and my cameras in the other, i found the best spot possible and awaited the steam trains' arrival. Acording to the papers the train was due at 9:36 and sure enough as the time came a silhouet appeared on the horizon with the well known sound of a steam whistle echoing through the yard.

With a last toot the train passed under the bridge.

After passing under the bridge, i packed my equipment to go down and meet the crew and introduce myself.

Before departure the engine was admired by great and small, and almost everyone wanted a picture along side the old locomotive. Because of the waiting time i choose to take some pictures of the loco before going up to the cab. Here i met a fellow member of the tramway museum and we had a little chat before the driver showed up.
When he did, he instantly guessed it was me, dressed in a yellow jacket, who was to be the special guest in the cab. I was introduced to the crew and the cab, where he told me about the most important controls in case of an emergency (the crew fainting for example), but as he could sense i had a knowledge of steam locos he didn't go further than that.
The fireman suggested that i could sit on a place on the tender, where i wouldn't be in the way of crew when they worked the machine down the line, we all agreed to that and before departure i had found my seat. From her i could take pictures out of the cab, in the dab and have a look over the roof. Not only that, if i may say so, best view exept from the driver's seat!
At 10:02 am we were set to got. Many a time have i traveled behind a steam loco in preservation. But sitting in the cab of one was somewhat different, the whole thing was shaking and noisy, truly AMAZING!
Anyway after a little while we came to the first stop on our route where we were to be passed by a DMU of the local railway we ran on. Although the driver attempted not to, the last coach of the train didn't make come into the platform. A mistake he later had his eyes out for!

The DMU cam into view and i manage to get a beautiful picture before we were off again.
On the go!
The crew had their eyes fixed on the timetables, as far as i recall there weren't that many delays that day, so they did a fair job to be honest. Here is the two firemen of the day, if one was tired the other one took over, not a common site back in the day i think.
My journey with the steam loco was my first real journey along the Hundested railway. When we came to Frederiksværk, boy was i surprised! We passed just beside the seaside and man, what a view. I later returned to this place, but keep reading to find out why.
Coming into Fredriksværk station, here we were to pass yet another DMU of the Local railway.
After passing the DMU we came into a little bit of a problem, the road crossing ahead would activate its "gates". This had to be solved by letting us go by at a slow pace.

During the whole journey, the fireman was hard at work. But that is the situation when one is on a steam loco. A splendid chap named mikkel, we managed to chat a bit during the journey and learned a little bit more of a steam loco's cab.
Full steam towards Hundested! Even though i barely think we hit 70 KPH it was still some speed for the old engine and exiting to hear it being put through its paces towards our last stop.
Arriving at Hundested. Here the we pass into the station and the driver slows down for the approach to the platform. The red passenger coach in the picture is an old intercity coach, former of the state railways (DSB). Its owned by the local railway club in Hundested, the MY-heritage train club. Runs every summer and its behind some of the longest mainline tours in Denmark, hauling their trains with the old My-class locomotive from the 1950's.
After having arrived i said goodbye to the crew and thank them for a lovely trip, then i went out to get some more footage from outside. Here i got some detail shots of the valve gear amongst other details as well.
In Hundested the Locomotive was uncoupled and ran around to get unto the other side of the train. Also in Hundested there was a great interest in the old locomotive and the author himself managed to answer a few questions from people passing by and who had a great interest in seing such an old locomotive in their hometown.
At 12:17 am the train was ready for departure back to Hillerød. The author found a spot not far from the station and got a shot of the engine, making its way out of the station with a great display of steam!
I then took the DMU service to the station of Little Kregme a few miles out of Frederiksværk. What i hadn't seen coming was that on one of the stations before, the steam trains was overtaken by the train i was in!

Because of this i manged to get a shot of a hardworking K-class from Little kregme.

Because of the early meeting with the steam engine i managed to get some time to go back to Frederikværk and see the steam train passing the beautiful seaside. I also managed to get a glimpse of the beautiful nature that surrounded this town.
Some time after i arrived i could hear the nearby railway crossing active its gates and therefore prepared myself for steam train. Sure enough a few seconds later 582 and its train rushed through slowing down before the station. I cathced a glimpse of the fireman i met before having a rest on the side of the tender i sat in before. Can imagine he would need a rest after the hard work he'd put on before.
From Frederiksværk i took to the little station of Østerbjerg further down the line towards Hundested. Here i'd found a little path on google maps laying just of to the railway with no type of fence what so ever. Perfect for trainspotting!

After seeing the steam engine pass i got down to the station and took the next train to Hillerød. Now i had only one mission left for the day.
Because of my cabride i was given a special timetable that showed where the train would be and where it could pass the DMUs. Because of this i could see that the train would be moving from Hillerød to Græsted on the Gribskov line moving North out of Hillerød. I got to the station ahead of the steam train.

I found a very good spot in the forest and prepared for filming. The forest made an excellent effect on the sounds of the steam train, already from a far you could here the train whistle echo through the forest, simply amazing!

After that i walked back through the forest and to the station where i took the train back to Hillerød and from ther home with the Electric S-train, my mission complete.

Pictures from this page will be published in one of the new 2015 books coming from SJB Media 1996 later this year, regarding the video footage of the day: this will be published on youtube in 2017 where a special documentary is due to arrive!
