Elias & the accidents part 1

The story of Kasper’s swim

It was a lovely autumn day in Gedser and the year was 1908. The wind blew in small gusts through stations and over landscapes, and leaves in all colours imaginable tumbled over the tracks, forming a kind of blanket over the rails and the ground surrounding them.

The K-Class locomotive - Kasper - stood with an express train en route to a ferry port called Ovrehoved. Ferries sailed from there to Sealand. Kasper was pulling the express train at that time because Per and the other P-Class engines had only just been built and some of Per's siblings had just started working in Jutland.

 The K-Class which Kasper was a member of, were the most used express engines and, on busy days, it happened that even two engines were used to pull the train. This is what is known on the railway as a "Double Header". On this day it wasn’t nessacary though, so Kasper pulled the train by himself.

Kasper stood and simmered merrily while the Guard - the person responsible for the train and who assisted the Driver by calculating the train's length, counting the axels and calculating the braking capacity (how well Kasper and his train could stop) and writing it on a note, tore the note from his writing pad and walked up to Kasper's cab.

The Guard handed the note to the Driver who accepted it with a nod. "Thank you"; said the Driver and closely examined the slip of paper. Just beside him in the cab, the Fireman was shoveling coal into the firebox, building up enough pressure for the journey ahead. Kasper felt wonderful as the water in his boiler became hotter from coals on the fire.

Kasper really wanted to leave, he was not an impatient engine but he wanted to do what Express Engines do best: "Rule the Rails". That's what he called it, anyway, when he was rushing along. There was still one more test to be done before he could depart. The brake tester reported for duty at the Driver, his job was to ensure that the brakes on the wagons worked like they should.

The brake tester asked the Driver to put on the brakes…
